Oil lamps are lit and colourful floor designs made out of coloured rice flour called kolam adorn homes and temples at Deepavali.
The Indian community in Malaysia celebrate a variety of festivals and celebrations, including life cycle rites. For Hindus, who comprise the mjority of Malaysian Indians, Deepavali and Thaipusam are the major festivals, celebrated with much pomp and rejoicing. Hindus and Sikhs celebrate their respective new years in April.
