Indian kinship, beliefs and value systems

The family is the basic unit of society among the Indians. Despite the erosion of the traditional extended family system due to migration and a growing pattern of nuclear families among Indian urbanites, the family provides the fundamental social organization for many of an individual’s principal needs. It is through this unit that values, culture and religion are adhered to and imparted to the younger generation, and through which matrimonial alliances are contracted. While Indians in Malaysia follow various faiths, the majority practise Hinduism.
