A traditional Iban longhouse

Traditional Iban social structures were organized around the efficient cultivation of hill rice, which was crucial for the community’s survival in the past. The large tracts of land required for this caused the Iban to establish a mobile and martial society for which longhouse living was conducive. Once known as Borneo’s infamous headhunters, the Iban form Sarawak’s largest indigenous group. Theirs is an egalitarian society, with cooperation and group conformity as its basic tenets.
