Classification and identity of Sarawak ethnic groups

Jayum Anak Jawan

There are more than 20 indigenous groups in Sarawak, accounting for approximately 72 per cent of its population, while the remainder comprise mainly Chinese, descended from immigrant labourers brought in during Brooke rule in the mid-19th and early 20th centuries, and other migrant communities such as the Indians, Javanese and Eurasians. Traditionally, the indigenous groups lived within their own geographical and cultural confines, separated by the natural terrain of river systems, jungles and mountains.
