Some Sabah Indigenous groups in traditional costume.

Sabah is home to some 50 ethnic groups, with about 30 regarded as indigenous to the state. The indigenous composition is diverse and complex, as methods to determine ethnic identity since the late 19th century have been inconsistent. Arbitrary claims account for fluid ethnic boundaries and changes in the indigenous listing since the first official census in 1891. These anomalies are due to a number of factors which have shaped the demographic character of the population.
