Appointed the nation's first Prime Minister upon Independence in 1957, Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra went on to become the principal architect of the union of Malaya with Singapore, Sarawak and Sabah, which in 1963 resulted in the creation of Malaysia. He is recognized as the Father of Malaysia (Bapa Malaysia). He steered the new Federation through its first, often difficult, years until his retirement in 1970.
