Expanding ties

Malaysia hosted the 1998 Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation Forum (APEC) Summit in Kuala Lumpur. Apec opened avenues of trade between Malaysia and the Hispanic market, which represents one-third of the world economy.

Under Dato' Hussein Onn's leadership, the scope of Malaysia's foreign policy expanded. Establishing friendly ties with more nations was a priority as the world's power balances shifted. Dr Mahathir Mohamad's premiership saw Malaysia dealing with any and all of the big powers that could help its economic development, while remaining careful not to ‘take sides' or participate in military alliances.
