The Emergency Resolved
The Malayan Air Force contingent saluting the Yang di-Pertuan Agong outside the Federal Secretariat Building, Kuala Lumpur, during the victory parade held on 1 August 1960 to celebrate the end of the Emergency.
The government's fight against the communist insurgency gained renewed energy from the arrival of Sir Gerald Templer. Meanwhile, the Malayan Communist Party (MCP) had decided to change its own strategy. By the time the Alliance government won the 1955 federal elections, the communists were prepared to surrender and join mainstream politics. However, the government rejected their terms, and, although destined for defeat, the MCP continued hostilities until 1960.
