People interested in a range of causes have formed politically oriented but non-governmental advocacy groups in modern-day Malaysia. They have made issues such as environmentalism, women's rights and human rights more visible to the public and policymakers. However, the tradition of non-governmental advocacy is still a young one in Malaysia, and its influence has often been limited.
