Constitutional monarchy
First-day cover published in 1997 to commemorate the first century of the Conference of Rulers.
Malaysia has a unique system of monarchy: a Yang di-Pertuan Agong (Paramount Ruler or King) is elected for a period of five years from among the nine Malay Rulers. While the role of traditional rulers in all democracies may have diminished; the Malay Rulers and Yang di-Pertuan Agong remain potent symbols of Malay political power. The traditions of the individual states are thus integrated with the federation.
