The disturbances which took place on Tuesday 13 May 1969 were a watershed in Malaysia's political history. This tragic episode was the outcome of excessive politicking after the 1969 elections, and reflected the demands of the different ethnic communities within the political order. A state of emergency was declared and the situation was effectively dealt with by the National Operations Council.
