The judiciary—in its wider sense, including not only the courts but also other elements of the legal establishment—is key to the rule of law as a fundamental tenet of government in Malaysia, and serves as the third branch of government. Alongside the secular court system exists a syariah court system, applicable only to Muslims, that deals with matters such as family, marriage, property, inheritance and divorce.
