31 January 1942, Johor Bahru occupied.
The Japanese continued to bomb Singapore while they repaired the Causeway which was damaged by withdrawing British forces.

As World War II was being waged in Europe, Japan joined the German-Italian Axis alliance in September 1940. The Japanese made a surprise invasion of the Malay Peninsula and northern Borneo in December 1941. Both territories were quickly overrun, and the British defence forces suffered a humiliating defeat.
