This volume tells the story of Malaysia’s history since 1940, and so follows on from Early Modern History, already published in this series. The emphasis is on the political conception and development of Malaysia. The economic story must be told in parallel, and is covered in a separate volume; that said, the two dimensions cannot be separated entirely, and many of the issues covered in this book have an economic aspect. Malaysia has been in existence since 1963, the volume also covers the political phases that preceded it, including the Malayan Union and the Federation of Malaya.
