The formation of Malaysia
Creating a nation-state comprising diverse ethnic, economic and cultural elements proved to be a complicated exercise. Every member state’s interests had to be protected in the search for common ground. However, the Malaysia Agreement demonstrated that compromise and concession could lead a diverse group of peoples towards a common destiny. On 16 September 1963 began the story of Malaysia as it is known today.
