The Emergency

Richard Stubbs

Roadblocks

Roadblocks were set up to curb the transport and sale of supplies to communists.

The Emergency lasted from June 1948 to July 1960. It pitted the British colonial administration and, later, the Malayan government, against the Malayan Communist Party (MCP), its rural-based guerrilla army and mostly ethnic-Chinese supporters. The MCP gained strength in the first few years of the Emergency but was unable to defeat the British forces. By the end of 1951, the two sides were deadlocked in an uneasy stalemate.
