Professor Dato' Dr Zakaria Ahmad is Professor of Strategic Studies and Coordinator of the Defence Studies Programme at the School of History, Politics and Strategic Studies, Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities of the Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia. He began his career in the Malaysian Civil Service and served in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the National Institute of Public Administration (INTAN). He then became an academic, and has taught at the Universiti Sains Malaysia, Universiti Malaya and Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM). He was Deputy Director-General of ISIS Malaysia from 1983 to 1985. At UKM, he has been Head of the Department of Political Science (1978-83) and Head of Strategic and Security Studies from 1986 till 1999. He was Dean of Social Sciences from 1999 to 2000. From 2000 to 2003, he was the Tun Abdul Razak Distinguished Chair in Southeast Asian Studies at Ohio University. He has published extensively on Malaysian politics, Southeast Asian and Asia-Pacific security issues, and has been a consultant to the Malaysian Ministries of Defence and Foreign Affairs.
