Chief Minister Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj

Diane K. Mauzy

Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj is the Father of Independence (Bapa Kemerdekaan). He became the nation's first and only Chief Minister (1955–7) before being appointed Prime Minister upon Independence. Already in his middle years when he was thrust upon the political scene, the Tunku was the right man for high office at a formative time, and set the course for Malaya's, and later Malaysia's, political development.
