After the Japanese surrender on 15 August 1945, the British reoccupied the Malay Peninsula. They governed the peninsula and North Borneo through a military administration until 1 April 1946. Sarawak was run by an Australian military administration. The population had to confront the chaotic aftermath of war, including chronic food shortages and social disorder. It was also a time of intense political competition.
