Nationalism in northern Borneo

Jayum A. Jawan

People of Sabah

The people of Sabah supported the formation of Malaysia, as evidenced by this rally in September 1968.

In contrast to the position in the Malay Peninsula, where nationalism, which already existed to an extent as a political force, quickly gained strength following the end of World War II, nationalistic sentiments in the northern Borneo states were initially not apparent, for several reasons. Nationalistic feelings were stimulated only when the proposal for the formation of Malaysia was aired.
