The Alliance and the Barisan Nasional
The Alliance, a coalition of the political parties of different communal groups, first arose to fight the Kuala Lumpur municipal elections of 1952, at which it met with great success. In 1974 the Alliance was superseded by the Barisan Nasional, which has remained in power since then due to its ability to bring together political parties representing the nation's major ethnic groups.
