Islam as a way of life

M. Kamal Hassan

The word Islam originates from Arabic and means ‘submission', ‘surrender', ‘obedience' and ‘peace'. It implies submission to the will of Allah and obedience to His commandments. Adherents to the religion are called Muslims. From the Muslim perspective, Islam in Malaysia is essentially the same as that practised in the Arab world. The external culture forms, however, vary from country to country. Islam has influenced Malay culture to the extent that the terms ‘Muslim' and ‘Malay' are often taken to be synonymous.
