The level of development of a country is measured by using the conventional economic, social and human development indices. For Islamic countries, however, an additional index may be used to indicate the level of adherence to the basic tenets of Islam as well as the achievements which benefit the Muslim community (ummah). For Malaysia, an Islamic Development Index (IDI) achieves this objective.
