Mosques
The Federal Territory Mosque, Kuala Lumpur
The Malay word masjid (mosque) comes from Arabic and literally means ‘the place for prostration'. Universally, mosques have large prayer halls with separate prayer areas for women and separate ablutionaries. In some mosques, a courtyard with a fountain or pool serves as the ablutionary. While the traditional Malay mosque resembled the Malay house and was adapted to the local climate, some contemporary modern mosques have air-conditioned prayer halls. Mosques in Malaysia have evolved into various styles over the centuries.
