East Java was Islamized in 15th century CE. The Greast Mosque of Demak dates back to 1479.
The period of Islamic expansion from the 13th to the 16th century CE is commonly called the ‘Islamic period'. The Islamization of the Malay Archipelago brought about a profound cultural change, particularly in Malay letters, art, architecture, dress and marriage customs. Although the spread of Islam slowed down due to Western colonization from the early 16th century, the Malay-Indonesian Archipelago still contains the largest concentration of Muslims in any geographical area of comparable size.
