The role of Islamic places of worship
Muslim places of worship are of several types. These include surau (small prayer houses), madrasah (Islamic schools) and mosques. The mosque serves as a spiritual, educational, social and cultural centre, especially in villages. Even in urban areas, Muslim men are required to perform their Friday prayers, known as sembahyang Jumaat in Malay, at the mosque. Muslim men are also encouraged to go to the mosque or surau for the five daily prayers.
