Islamic festivals and celebrations
Sending Hari Raya cards is a tradition begun after Independence. Today, electronic greeting cards are becoming popular.
The two main Islamic festivals in Malaysia are Hari Raya Aidilfitri and Hari Raya Aidiladha. Hari Raya, literally ‘great day', can be translated simply as ‘festival'. Other Islamic festivals celebrated include Maal Hijrah (the first day of the Muslim calendar), Maulidur Rasul (the Prophet's birthday), Nuzul al-Qur'an (commemorating the first revelation of the Qur'an) and Israk Mikraj (the Day of Ascension). The scale of celebration for Nuzul Al-Qur'an and Israk Mikraj varies between the states but the rest are national holidays.
