Hindu temples
Sri Kandaswamy Temple, Brickfields, Kuala Lumpur
The temple is an important institution in Hinduism—an essential component of the Hindu practice of worship. Not only is it looked upon as a sacred place where God resides, manifesting himself in the forms worshipped there but also as a venue for religious observance and celebrations. The name of each temple is based on the divine form or symbol of the deity revered there. In Malaysia, where the majority of the Hindu population traces its origins back to southern India, the style of temples reflect this fact and are distinguished particularly by their carved gopuram (towered gateway entrances).
