Hindu festivals

Devapoopathy Nadarajah and G. Sivapalan

Most holy days are based on the lunar calendar, except for Thai-ponggal and the Hindu New Year. The Hindu almanac (pancangam) provides the date for these festivals. All the holy days are observed in temples as well as at home. Festivals for a particular deity are observed most elaborately in the temples dedicated to that particular deity. Each temple also holds an annual festival of 3–10 days' duration, usually in conjunction with one of the popular festivals, for example the Murugan Temple at Batu Caves, Selangor, celebrates its festival at Thaipusam.
