Halal and haram

Abu Bakar Abdul Majeed

In Islam, activities and things can be classified in various ways. Activities may be obligatory (fardhu or wajib), desirable (mandub or sunat), permissible (mubah), undesirable (makruh) or prohibited (haram). Things are either permissible (halal) or prohibited (haram). As a result of the Islamic resurgence in the latter part of the 20th century, Muslims in Malaysia have become more sensitive to activities, foodstuffs and other substances that are not permissible in Islam. Where foodstuff is concerned, a rigorous process has been devised to ensure food certified as halal is genuinely so.
