Christian denominations in Malaysia
Christianity arrived on the shores of the nation as part of the European colonial expansion and, more recently, with North American neo-colonialism and globalization. Roman Catholicism developed primarily in the 16th century, especially with the arrival of the Portuguese missionary St Francis Xavier in Melaka. The mainline and older Protestant churches were brought to Malaysia especially in the 19th century while the younger Protestant churches came in the early 20th century especially between the World Wars, whereas the numerous evangelical and free churches are of recent origins.
