Dakwah organizations

M. Kamal Hassan

The term dakwah denotes Islamic missionary activity and has only come into use in recent decades. In the past, the term tabligh (preaching) was used. Every Muslim is considered a da'i or missionary. Organized dakwah movements in Malaysia can be traced back to 1960 when Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra, the first prime minister, founded the Pertubuhan Kebajikan Islam seMalaysia (PERKIM)—Muslim Welfare Organisation Malaysia—which propagates Islam in non-coercive ways. Subsequently, several other dakwah organisations have been established.
