The Chinese have been coming to the Malay Peninsula and Borneo for many centuries. The earliest recorded community is a small settlement established in Melaka by Hokkien traders (from Fujian province, China) in the 15th century. Confucianism, Taoism and Buddhism are the three main faiths. The influence of these can be seen in Chinese culture and everyday life in Malaysia—calligraphy, Taoism, worship of Tien Guan (the Heavenly Duke), rituals of filial piety and ancestor worship.
