Tropical Storm Greg brought with its powerful gusts and whirling fury devastation that, on 26 December 1996, tore through Sabah, killing at least 238 people in its path.

In Malaysia, winds are largely attributed to large-scale phenomena such as monsoons and typhoons, and local influences such as land-sea breezes, thunderstorms and squall lines. Although Malaysia is almost exempt from direct typhoon hits, their aftereffects can result in serious flooding and destruction. Thunderstorms are prevalent throughout the year, with severe storms wreaking serious havoc.
