Wildlife at risk
The Malayan tiger
In the past, Malaysia's rich wildlife was sought by indigenous hunter-gatherers for food, and hunted as sport by colonial visitors. Today, the biggest threat comes from the destruction of the land the animals depend upon for shelter and nourishment. As forests are logged and converted to agricultural use, the rich diversity of fauna is seriously threatened. To combat declining populations, reserves and sanctuaries have been set up by the country's wildlife departments.
