Tropical weathering

Transformation of an igneous rock that has been exposed to tropical weathering. The rock before (far left) and after weathering.

Malaysia's landscape provides an environment conducive to prolonged chemical weathering because of its high moisture content, extremes in temperature and the absence of a significant glacial history. Rocks in the tropics normally show extensive transformation by the weathering process. Rocks are turned to thick soils which are rich in oxides and hydroxides of iron and aluminium.
