Sundaland

Entent of Sundaland during the last glacial period showing the river systems that developed on the Sunda Shelf and in the Malacca Strait.

The stable continental shelf known as Sundaland extends southwards from Southeast Asia across an area of 1 800 000 square kilometres. It is mostly covered by shallow seas, but Borneo (Sabah and Sarawak) is an eroded metamorphic part of the shelf that rises up above sea level. The whole area, whose existence was first recorded in 1845, was once above water. The changing geology of the area is thought to have significantly contributed to flora and fauna distribution in this region.
