Post-Independence developments
Since Independence from the British in 1957, Malaysia has actively pursued policies to develop and modernize the country and to eradicate poverty amongst the population. Rapid development from the 1970s onwards is most obviously seen in urban expansion and in population growth. Such development brings changes that increasingly have a negative impact on Malaysia's natural environment.
