Peatswamp forests of Sarawak
Sarawak's peatswamps support some of the last remaining viable populations of Malaysia's most threatened species.
Sarawak is the largest state in Malaysia and has, proportionally, the largest area of wetlands. Swamp forests constitute the largest wetland habitat in the country and the vast majority of these are peatswamp forests. Peatswamps cover more than 2 million hectares, of which about 80 per cent, or 1.2 million hectares, are in Sarawak. These swamps are vitally important because of the endemic plant species and the endangered animals they support, and they are increasingly being regarded as significant freshwater habitats which need protecting.
