National environment policy

Sham Sani and Sharifah Mastura S. Abdullah

Malaysia's policy on the environment aims 'to provide continued economic, social, and cultural progress of Malaysian people through environmentally sound and sustainable development'. The legal framework for such policy is the 1974 Environmental Quality Act (EQA) and its subsequent amendments, under whose auspices Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) surveys are carried out. EIAs are important quality control documents that advise on how to prevent environmental degradation during the course of development projects.
