Forest management

In one study, it was found that for the removal of 133 large 'selected' trees, a further 1,145 trees were completely destroyed and damaged.

Malaysian tropical forests are acknowledged to be amongst the most species-rich on earth. They are exceptionally well stocked with trees of the Dipterocarpaceae family, which are valued for the high quality of their timber. As the forests face unprecedented pressure from human activity, such as conversion to other land use and timber harvesting, achieving a balance between economic exploitation and ecological preservation is a major concern. To prevent the forests disappearing altogether, sustainable management practices have been introduced.
