Lowlands and wetlands
Malaysia is richly endowed with wetland areas. The diverse types range from swamp forests to lakes to rivers.
The lowlands of Malaysia constitute vast areas of alluvial and coastal plains that slope very gently down to the coasts. They spread across 3.3 million hectares, or 10 per cent of Malaysia's total land area, and are diverse in character. Lowland flood plains and coastal plains are rich in natural resources, with important habitats like mangroves, peatswamp forests and intertidal mud flats providing a refuge for wildlife.
