Limestone and karst morphology

When the water table remains deep, the landscape eventually becomes rugged, consisting of limestone towers.

Only 0.3 per cent of the land area in Malaysia is covered by limestone, but the dramatic landscape that the rock gives rise to guarantees it a noteworthy place in the geology and geomorphology of the country. Limestone hills in Malaysia are mainly of the tower karst type and are characterized by sheer cliffs. Striking karst forms include those of the Langkawi Islands and the underground phenomena found in the caves of Mulu.
