The global dimension
The commitments made in Rio de Janeiro in June 1992 at the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development provided the international community with an opportunity to replace piecemeal policy making, which had characterized environmental awareness in the 1970s and 1980s, with integrated and sustainable management. The Rio accords held out an olive branch for developed and developing nations to create partnerships to compare experiences, examine opportunities for cooperation and strengthen informal networks.
