Ecotourism

Overseas visitors

In the 10 years between 1985 and 1994, the number of overseas visitors to Malaysia grew at average of 11.5 per cent a year.

Since the 1990s, Malaysia's tourist industry has branched off into new areas, inviting local and international visitors to visit outdoor, natural attractions. The new brand of tourist is encouraged to learn how to protect the environment, and it is his money that in turn pays for the conservation projects in, for example, the country's national parks. The challenges ahead include successfully marrying environmental sustainability with the growth of the ecotourist sector.
