Coastal erosion
The process of coastal erosion
Since the 1960s, Malaysia's long and attractive coastline has been increasingly threatened. The unabated development of commercial, industrial and tourism centres has directly and indirectly caused erosion along one-third of the country's 4800-kilometre coastline. Natural conditions combine with man-made influences to produce this serious situation, which is a costly drain on the public purse. Strict management of the coastal zone is needed to stem the flow of erosion.
