The increasing need for food and cash crops by Malaysia's growing population has exerted pressure on land use, and has seen an acute shortage of workers, particularly in the agricultural sector. To maintain agricultural productivity, investment in mechanization, irrigation schemes and in agrochemicals has been necessary. Agrochemicals are compounds that protect and fertilize crops. The positive productive, and thus economic, results from their use must be balanced against the potential damage they can inflict on the environment.
